ある「考え」が頭に浮かんだ。
それは何らかの思考の過程で生まれたものかもしれないし、他との関連なく天から降ってきたものかもしれない。
いずれにしても初めの段階では、その「考え」には裏付けがない。ごく直観的なものだ。なんとなく、漠然と、全体的に、感覚的に、頭脳が言葉のピースを選択して盤上のしかるべき位置を推測して置いたに過ぎない。
裏付けるためには理性の働きが必要だ。ピースの周りを言葉を尽くして埋めていかなくては、せっかくの「考え」はただ盤上で一人きりになってしまう。そのピースは位置や向きが違うかもしれない。嵌めてみたら形が合わないかもしれない。そもそも全く別のセットから持ってきたピースかもしれない。

理性の働きを頭脳の中だけで完結させるためには高度な訓練が必要だ。まず、ある「考え」の同一性を長時間保持することは困難である。頭脳内の化学物質が流動するのと同じく、思考も流動する。理性や思考を直接見ることはできないので、その同一性を検証することは難しい。
次に、思考は一次元の線上で行うものではない。同時に複数の視点から問題を見つめなければならない。二次元、三次元、場合によっては四次元以上の並列処理が必須である。これを頭脳内で行うのは至難だ。

ここで文字の出番である。文字があってこそ、思考を固定化することができ、外部化することによって容易に客観的な検証ができる。順序の入れ替えや言葉の取捨選択も楽だし、頭脳と違って時間や時空の制限もない。文字列自体は一次元だが、二次元以上の思考は前後の文章との関連性を見る、行間を読むなどの技術によって可能になる。しかも一度書いてしまえば、紙やデータを紛失しない限り、半永久的に忘れない。文字は偉大だ。文字なくして文明なし。

頭脳の中だけで明快に思考できるようになりたいものだ。

何か刺激がないと、思考は生まれない。刺激は外からやってくる。読んだ本、見た番組、その日起こった出来事。。しかし、内側からやってくる刺激もある。それは絶えざる内省から生まれる。あのときこうすればよかった、あの考えは今思うとおかしい、このような見方もあることに気が付いた、etc… 内側からものを考えられる人を尊敬する。

そして刺激が激しい相互作用を引き起こし細胞を活性化するためには、知識と知恵が必要だ。
無からは何も生まれない。宇宙に石を投げても、石が飛んでいく以上のことは起こらない。
しかし海に石を投げれば水面が揺れる。揺れは全方位に伝わり、さまざまな場所に影響を及ぼす。石は海の底に落ち、小さなヤドカリを眠りから覚ますかもしれない。

新・三銃士の第一回を観た。舞台はフランス、国王ルイ13世と枢機卿リシュリューの二大勢力が争う時代。主人公の父ベルトランは元々国王に仕える銃士隊の一員であったが、かつて同じ隊にいた戦友ロシュフォールは枢機卿に仕えていた。ロシュフォールは枢機卿の命令で、ベルトランを暗殺する。

主人公の父ベルトランは言う、
「国王万歳！」
かつての戦友ロシュフォールは言う、
「枢機卿万歳！」
ロシュフォールはベルトランを一突きし、ベルトランは息絶える。

このシーンが嫌いだ。どうして自分の所属する団体が、仕える人間が、その人間の生き方を決めなければならないのか？

頭で考えているだけではいけない。
頭の中では、論理的な短絡や思い込みを除外することが難しい。独りよがりになる可能性が高い。
また、前に考えていたことを思い出したり、直前に考えていたこととの整合性を取ることも難しい。
自分がそれができるスーパー人間ならいいんだけれど、できない。
一度文章にすることで、考えを客観的な形にすることが出来る。形にしたものは、検証がたやすい。自分に対する第三者の目を容易に作ることができる。
他人の書いたものを読み自分の糧とするだけでなく、以前自分が書いたものも自分の糧にできれば、と思う。自画自賛ではなく、批判の材料として。
未来の自分に値するものを、たくさん書きたい。
